Ganti Oli is an exhibition aiming to explore the possibilities of expanding the practice, concept and definition of painting as shown by the works of Indonesian contemporary.

Curated by Agung Hujatnikajennong, Enin Supriyanto and Rifky Effendy, it will show works by Indonesian painters—Agus Suwage, Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo, Beatrix Hendriani Kaswara, Dipo Andy, Handiwirman Saputra, Nyoman Masriadi, Putu Sutawijaya, R.E. Hartanto, Wedhar Riyadhi and Yunizar—as primary examples of the present specific development after the historical insurgence by Indonesian avant-gardist Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru in the 70s.

The selection of artists has been conducted to show various approaches towards the state of painting as one of artistic practices that have underwent conceptual changes along with the transformation of visual languages, codes and system in the contemporary society. Within specific Indonesian context, painting has become a medium that absorbs myriads of postmodern visual appearance and production of signs—from kitschy neon light, digital images on computer screen and printed mass media, to high-art medium such as images of painting itself. This exhibition tends to see the practice of contemporary painting not as a way to represent something ‘outside’ the painting; rather, it signifies a question on why it should be transformed into painting.
